1 Value of unpaid care provided by family caregivers, 2024

$1T In unpaid care U.S. family caregivers provided in 2024 — work equivalent to 23.8 million full-time employees, about 17% of the nation’s full-time workforce.

59 million people caring for an adult provided 49.5 billion hours of care in 2024. AARP values that at $1.01 trillion, more than private employers spent on health care in the same year and more than Medicaid.

The 17% describes the labor equivalent — 23.8 million full-time workers, measured against the nation’s full-time workforce. It belongs to the hours rather than to the dollars.

2 Number of family caregivers in the United States

63M Americans are family caregivers, up nearly 50% since 2015 — and seven in ten are employed on top of it.

63 million adults, close to one in four, cared for an adult or for a child with a complex medical condition in the past year. That is 20 million more people than the same survey counted in 2015.

3 Adults aged 65 and over, and stated preference to remain at home

61M Americans are 65 or older. Among those living independently at home, 60% would rather stay there with help than move if they could no longer manage on their own.

Two sources, and the figure combines them. 61.2 million people were 65 or older in the Census Bureau’s 2024 estimates.

The 60% is Pew’s, and its denominator is narrower than the population figure: adults 65 and older who live in their own home with nobody caring for them there, asked what they would want if they could no longer manage alone. 18% would choose assisted living and 1% a nursing home.

4 Direct care job openings arising from turnover, 2024 to 2034

8.9M Direct care jobs will come open between 2024 and 2034 as current workers leave the field — vacancies the sector is already struggling to fill.

PHI projects 9.7 million direct care openings over the decade, of which about 772,000 are newly created jobs. The remaining 8.9 million are positions coming open as workers move to other occupations or leave the workforce.

The direct care workforce is growing — it added nearly 1.8 million jobs between 2014 and 2024 and is projected to add more new jobs than any other occupation. What the sector cannot solve is turnover, and that is the number above.

5 Monthly cost of assisted living

$6,200 is the national median monthly cost of assisted living. New York runs above the national median.

VivaLynx pricing is not published yet. The comparison drawn on the families page — six years of VivaLynx against one month of assisted living — rests on our own price rather than on this survey, and will be stated here once that price is set.

6 Two counts of family caregivers

Two caregiver counts appear above and both are correct. 63 million is every family caregiver. 59 million is the 94% of them caring for an adult, which is the population AARP values at $1 trillion. The two answer different questions and neither replaces the other.
